What affects the cost of a fire alarm.
We don’t publish prices because buildings differ too much. These are the things that decide a quote.
The main factors
- Size and layout. More rooms, floors and devices mean more equipment and labour.
- System type. Conventional is usually the lowest equipment cost, addressable costs more per device and wireless more again, though it saves labour. See systems explained.
- Category of coverage. Detection throughout the building costs more than detection of escape routes only. See BS 5839.
- Building construction. Solid walls, high ceilings and listed fabric make cabling harder.
- Access and working hours. Working out of hours or around trading has a cost.
- Extras. Sounders, visual alarms, door-holder interfaces, remote monitoring and emergency lighting.
- Existing equipment. Re-using sound parts of an old system can save money.
- Electrical work. Supplies or distribution board changes, if needed.
Running costs
Allow for servicing, usually twice a year for commercial premises, batteries and occasional repairs. A cheap installation that is hard to maintain is not cheap for long.
How to get a sensible quote
- Ask for a quote based on a survey, not a phone guess
- Ask which standard and category it is designed to
- Make sure certificates and a logbook are included
- Compare like with like: devices, category, warranty and servicing

Common questions.
How much does a fire alarm cost?
It depends on the building, system type, category and extras. We price each job after a visit rather than quoting a figure that might not fit your premises.
Is a wireless system more expensive?
The equipment usually costs more, but installation labour and disruption are lower. Over a whole job, it can be competitive in older or occupied buildings.
Should I choose the cheapest quote?
Compare what is included: standard, category, device count, certificates and servicing. A lower price that covers less isn’t the same product.
